Théodore & Marguerite began as a simple scene: a young couple in a Parisian café in the early 1940s.
At first glance, they seem close, perhaps even carefree. But as the painting evolved, a different atmosphere emerged - one marked by quiet tension and emotional weight.
The era makes itself felt in subtle ways: the stillness, the distance between them, the way she looks out and he looks away. There’s hope in her gaze, but also awareness. His posture seems protective, maybe cautious.
This work explores intimacy under pressure - what it means to stay connected when the world around you is uncertain.
Part of the Les amours series, which reflects on human connection in its many forms.
